Eligibility

Open to UK (home) students only.

The York Refugee Bursary is open to students with a 'Home' fee status. If you're unsure whether you're classed as a UK or international student for fee purposes, check your fee status.

The Refugee Bursary is a non-repayable award for students who come to York and have a Refugee immigration status.

If your status changes during your studies, you may become eligible. Further information can be found on our support for refugees page.

How to apply

We will automatically assess your eligibility based on your residual household income using the information supplied in your application for Student Loans. Assessments are run in October, January and April. Bursaries are awarded based on your eligibility on the date of the assessment, and allocated on a prorated basis.

If you or your parents withhold your consent to share financial information on your Student Loans application, we will not be able to confirm your eligibility for the bursary.

You do not need to make a separate application for the Refugee Bursary.

We will automatically assess your eligibility based on household income details you have provided to the Student loans company and immigration status you have provided in your application to study at the University.

For eligibility enquiries, contact our Student Advisers on +44 (0)1904 324140 or email student-advisers@york.ac.uk.

Further information on the support you may be entitled to and how to confirm your eligibility status can be found on our support for refugees page.

Please make sure your information is up to date before 1 April 2025, as no awards will be made after the final bursary assessment run in April 2025.

Careers - On Track

The University offers an exclusive opportunity for first and second year undergraduates in receipt of a York Bursary to participate in On Track. On Track is an opt-in programme which offers opportunities for students to participate in a range of activities which are designed to help them develop key employability skills over the year. This includes access to professional development workshops, coaching and workplace visits, building confidence and professional networks along the way.

If you are a first or second year undergraduate student and you have received a letter about your bursary eligibility, look out for an invitation to a briefing session in October 2024. This will come from the Careers and Placements team via Handshake. Information about the programme can be found on the On Track Programme webpage.
