Short courses for autistic students

If you are an autistic student (or recent graduate), we offer short courses to help you prepare for work, whether this is into a graduate role, a placement or an internship, or part-time work while you study.

Into Work

What is Into Work and who is eligible?

Into work is a supportive course designed to help autistic student to navigate the challenges of moving into placements, internships or part-time work. The course is open to first and second year home autistic students (with or without diagnosis).

What does the course cover?

The course is delivered by United Response, largely online via zoom. There are two online short sessions on Wednesday afternoons with an optional in-person session the following Wednesday. The final session will include input from employers and from autistic professionals.

Topics and themes covered in the course include:

  • Recruitment processes and practices
  • Reasonable adjustments and disclosure
  • Job search strategies, tips and techniques
  • Applications and interviews
  • Employment law

Course dates

The course consists of three sessions. The first session will be on 14 February, 1.30pm to 3.30pm; the second session on 21 February, 1.30pm to 3.30pm, and the optional third session (in person on campus) will be held on 28 February, 1.30pm to 3pm.

How to apply

Applications will open in Handshake on 4 December and will close on 31 January. Please note that only UG1 and UG2 students will be eligible to apply.

If you are a final year undergraduate autistic student, or you are autistic and graduated from your undergraduate degree in the last 12 months, you are also eligible to apply for career coaching. This offers a consistent dedicated careers coach who will get to know you and provide 1:1 careers support tailored to your needs for up to six sessions. Graduation to Employment

What is Graduation to Employment and who is eligible?

Graduation to Employment  is a supportive course designed to help equip autistic students to navigate the challenges of moving on from university into employment. The course is open to autistic students (with or without diagnosis) who are finalists or recent University of York graduates. 

What does the course cover?

The course is delivered by United Response largely online via zoom. 

There are two online short sessions on Wednesday afternoons with an optional in-person session the following Wednesday. The final session will include input from employers and from autistic professionals.

  • Reasonable adjustments and disclosure
  • Job search strategies, tips and techniques

  • Employment law

The course consists of three sessions. The first session will be held on 6 March 2024, 1.30pm to 3.30pm; the second session on 13 March, 1.30pm to 3.30pm and the optional third session (in person on campus) will be held on 20 March, 1.30pm to 3pm.

Applications will open on Handshake on 1 February and will close on 25 February. Please note that only final year undergraduates and recent University of York graduates will be eligible to apply.
