Get active: could you cycle to campus?

Posted on 9 October 2023

Cycling, if you are able to, is a great way to keep active and has a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing.

With over 5,000 bike parking spaces available and dedicated cycle routes to, from and around campus, cycling is easy and convenient at York.

We have one way systems in place to help you get around safely, and secure bike sheds and bike pumps available at your convenience.

Did you know you can bike from the Library on Campus West to York Sport Village on Campus East in just 9 minutes? You can also bike from the city centre to Campus West in just 18 minutes.

Our Inter-campus travel guide gives you estimated cycle and walking times, including to and from the city centre to both campuses.

We encourage sustainable travel at the University because it has both positive health and environment benefits. We offer a number of incentives to help you cycle safely, such as discounted prices on cycling equipment including bike locks, helmets, lights and bells which can be obtained at the university mailroom, or by emailing transport-team@york.ac.uk

In addition to discounted cycling equipment, we also offer free bike doctor sessions on campus for all students. Here, students can receive a free basic service check on their bicycle - booking in advance is required.
