Top tips for getting ready to study

Posted on 25 September 2022

Make sure you’ve covered the basics (or see a reminder of things you may have missed).

  1. Remember to check your University email and calendar regularly
You need to know where your lectures and other activities are taking place. Why not use Google Calendar through your University Google account to keep track of your events? Find out about your timetable.

  2. Find where you need to be using our online campus map and room finder
Use the online campus map to find your department and key services and offices.

  3. Familiarise yourself with the Library
The Library is more than just books! With learning materials, study spaces, subject guides and study skills support, are you aware of everything the Library can do for you? Read our Introduction to the Library.

  4. Get online with new devices
Get your computer, phone or tablet connected to the University wifi. Follow the setup instructions. Games consoles, smart speakers and smart TVs can connect to our ‘My Devices’ network. Follow the instructions to register your device. IT Services offers a wide range of support, from getting connected to offering different ways to save money, share information and collaborate with others. See our Introduction to IT Services for full details.

  5. Get IT secure
If you haven’t already, you’ll need to activate two-factor authentication in order to access your University email account and other apps. Find out more about two-factor authentication. You also need to check that you have current security questions set up for your University account, which are used to recover your account if you lose access.

  6. Connect remotely
Connect to our IT facilities wherever you are, with services including a Virtual Private Network and a Virtual Desktop Service. Follow instructions to set up your device to work off campus.

  7. Familiarise yourself with the new-look Yorkshare VLE
Returning students will notice a new landing page on the Yorkshare VLE. It’s now a different way to navigate to your modules so please check our Yorkshare VLE guides to become familiar with the new way of finding your way around.

  8. Download the MyUoY and Safezone apps from your app store
MyUoY is our app designed by students, for students. View your timetable for each day and add campus events you’re interested in to personalise your schedule. Download the Safezone App to get quick access to key services: emergency calls, first aid, campus maps and general help desk.

Download your handbook

Don't forget you'll find a summary of everything you need to know in your University handbook. Find your handbook on the new undergraduate or new postgraduate welcome pages.
