At York, you can access services, apps and support, even when you're not on campus.
Access restricted apps and files
Get access to commonly used Windows applications and your filestore using the:
- Virtual Desktop Service (VDS)
Connect to the University network from home to access restricted web apps and map your filestore. You can do this using the:
- Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Advanced users may wish to use the SSH service or file transfer service.
Protect University information
It's important your device is configured to keep information safe. University guidance outlines what steps you can take and covers both personal and managed devices.
Use Google apps
Access your University email, calendar and cloud storage with Google Workspace. Work across your computer, phone or tablet, create and share documents and collaborate in real time.
Install software
Access a range of premium software at home using University-provided licence codes. You can also protect your personal computer for free with tools such as Microsoft Security Essentials.
Connect to wifi
Eduroam wifi is available in York city centre and at other universities.

You can contact IT Support when you're off campus. If you're experiencing technical issues, we can connect to your device remotely using secure tools.
