Welcome to the Centre for Global Programmes short courses.

The programme will run between 14 August to 6 September 2023.

The aim of your programme is to:

  • help to improve your ability to speak to, and understand, English speakers
  • give you the opportunity to discuss, research and write about key aspects of British culture
  • introduce you to basic research techniques and improve your presentation skills

How are you?

It's important to look after your physical and mental health, so that you can get the most out of your time with us.

What to do if you don’t feel well

If you are feeling tired, stressed, sad or anxious, you can always talk to us, and we will do our best to arrange help and support for you.

If you need to report an incident that involves you and/or other students, you can use the University’s Report + Support service.

  • Conduct a semi-structured interview
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation summarising the results of the research

Assessment criteria

Maintenance

  • M1 You make regular entries of sufficient length

Content

  • C1 You clearly describe what you have learned providing examples and are able to meaningfully reflect on what you have learned

Non-linguistic Features

  • NFL1 You can use body language, gesture and eye contact to engage the audience effectively

Delivery

  • D1 You can speak without overly referring to your notes and without significant hesitation
  • D2 You use techniques such as using realia, asking rhetorical questions, anecdotes etc to engage the audience

Pronunciation

  • P1 You are intelligible and sentence and word stress is accurately placed, you vary your intonation appropriately including using pause and stress effectively to highlight key information.

Structure and Sign-posting

  • SSP1 Your presentation is logical, easy to follow through the use of appropriate sign-posting language, and each section relates to the overall purpose.

Data-gathering

  • DG1 Your project group create appropriate and effective research questionnaire/s/and/or gather secondary research to collect relevant information about your topic.
  • DG2 Your project group get a sufficient number of appropriate people to complete your questionnaire.

Data Presentation

  • DP1 Your project group can use appropriate graphs, tables, images etc which present your key findings and are clear and meaningful
  • DP2 Your project group can clearly identify your key findings 
  • DP3 Your project group have effective visual support (e.g PPT) which is both accurate and takes into consideration the needs of the audience 

Time Management

  • TM1 Your presentation is of an appropriate length i.e. not too short or long

Communicative Achievement

CA1 Your article uses a number of persuasive techniques (e.g. CAFOREST)

CA2 Your article fulfils its communicative purpose, i.e. it either informs, entertains, recommends, discusses, etc

Layout

L1 Your article is well-designed, i.e images, font and layout effectively create a coherent impression

L2 Your article is of an appropriate length

Originality

O1 You can bring together material from a range of sources and paraphrase where appropriate to create original content
