Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching

Azure is a comprehensive cloud computing platform provided by Microsoft. 

It provides professional developer tools free of charge for teaching and research in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM subjects).

It offers a wide range of services, including computing, analytics, storage and networking.

Key features

  • Develop and create cross-platform apps.
  • Create games and websites.
  • Manage application life cycles.
  • Software available includes products such as:
    • Microsoft R client
    • SQL Server
    • Visual Studio
    • Windows 10
    • Windows Server
    • Windows Visio
Available to students and staff (restrictions apply)

You'll need to verify your academic status by providing your University email address. It's only available for STEM subjects.

App and web-based

This service is primarily web-based, with some app-based tools.

There isn’t a cost to you for standard use.

Service commitments

Your responsibilities and policies

General terms of use for this software:

  • The software must be used for instructional and research purposes.
  • It may not be used for commercial gain or used by staff to run the infrastructure of the STEM department.

Terms of use for students:

  • Azure for Students gives you $100 credit for 12 months.
  • The offer includes access to more than 25 free services, including computer, network, storage, and databases.
  • Any charges that you incur during this period are deducted from the credit. To continue using Azure services after you exhaust your $100 credit, you must either renew (if you're 12 months in) or upgrade to a pay-as-you-go subscription.

  • This service is managed by a third party.
  • They are responsible for monitoring, identifying and fixing faults. We provide advice and support for local issues during our opening hours.
  • Support is available via Microsoft Azure (microsoft.com).
