We recommend you investigate US Direct Loans before applying for a private student loan, as Direct Loans are often cheaper. US private loans do not enable you to borrow more funds than US Direct Loans.
You are free to choose a loan provider, however Sallie Mae is the only current private lender that we are aware of that will lend for study outside the USA. You will need good credit and a co-signer in order to apply.
You should not apply for a Sallie Mae loan more than 180 days before the disbursement date. If your course starts in October, you should not apply until May, or your loan application will become invalid.
How to apply for a Sallie Mae loan:
- Complete our online Direct Loan Application Form. Answer Yes to Part 2, question 5: Do you intend to apply for or have you already applied for a private loan?
- Apply to Sallie Mae online.
- Send a copy of your electronically-signed promissory note to email@example.com. This is a legal requirement; we will not process loans without this document. Please enter ‘Sallie Mae Loan’ in the subject field of the email.
We are not able to recommend any one lender over another or advise on the suitability of any loan product. It is your responsibility to carefully research the terms and conditions (including repayment obligations, interest rates, deferral options, etc) and consider the implications on your specific circumstances before proceeding with any loan.
