How to apply

There are some key differences to the process of applying for Direct Loans to fund your study at York compared to applying for funding at a US institution.

You will have to provide a number of documents, which you may not have needed for loan applications in the US. You must send these documents to us even if you have received notification that they will be forwarded to us automatically.

Read this page in full before starting your application.

Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. This will determine your eligibility for a loan.

Our School Code is G06700 or 00670000 depending on the form you are filling in.

FAFSA applications for 2019/20 are open. You should complete your FAFSA as early as possible.

Once your FAFSA application has been processed, you will receive a summary Student Aid Report (SAR). We will be notified of your application, and will be able to obtain a copy of your full SAR.

Complete your FAFSA

The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees.
All Direct Loan applicants must sign a Master Promissory Note with the Department of Education. This is done on the US Department of Education website. You will need to:

  • Sign a subsidised/unsubsidised MPN for your subsidised/unsubsidised loan
  • Sign a Plus MPN if you wish to take out a Parent Plus loan

You will need to include your electronically signed MPN(s) in your application to us.

Sign your subsidised/unsubsidised MPN(s)

Sign your Plus MPN

If you want to take out a Graduate Plus Loan you must complete a credit check via the US Department of Education. Credit checks are valid for 180 days. If you completed a credit check before April 2019, you will need to complete another one.

You will need to take a screenshot of your successful credit check confirmation and include this in your application to us.

Complete a Plus Loan credit check

It is a legal requirement for all students who take out Direct Loans to complete entrance counselling. While this may sound ominous, it is simply a process to ensure that you understand the terms and conditions of your loan.

You must complete entrance counselling for each academic year that you request a loan to study with us. You can do this on the US Department of Education website.

You will need to take a screenshot of your entrance counselling confirmation and include this in your application to us.

Complete entrance counselling

Once you have completed steps 1 to 4 and you have all the relevant documents to hand you are ready to complete our Direct Loan online application form.

What next?

Once we have received your application

We will acknowledge receipt of your application and supporting documents. If we have any queries we will raise them with you before your loan is finalised.

Then we'll calculate your personal maximum Cost of Attendance, and ask you to confirm how much you want to borrow.

If we have any difficulties when processing your loan we'll contact you. Otherwise, we will let you know when your loan application has been approved.

How long will it take?

We aim to process Direct Loan applications within three weeks of receipt. During the core processing months of July to September, this may take slightly longer.

Once your loan(s) have been approved we will post you your US Loan Confirmation Letter. This details your loan and disbursement information. Please remember to factor in times for international post (approximately ten days between the UK and the USA).

We process applications on a strictly first come first served basis, so you should apply as soon as you can.

Applying for a visa

UK Visas and Immigration will accept your US Loan Confirmation Letter as proof of funding for visa applications.

We strongly recommend that you do not book your appointment for your student visa until you have received your official confirmation letter. Unless you have proof of sufficient funds from other sources, you will need to have received your letter before booking an appointment.
