Environment and Sustainability Summer School
Join us to learn about key environmental and sustainability issues from our world-class academics.
Environment, sustainability and resilience is one of the key research themes at the University of York. According to The Times Higher Education, the impact of the University of York’s research in ecology and environmental science ranks second in the UK and 17th in the world.
This three-week summer school offers undergraduate students an exciting opportunity to expand their knowledge about the latest environmental and sustainability issues while studying in one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. The programme will also equip students to think critically and develop better academic communications skills.
This programme will suit students looking for careers in environmental consultancy, environmental research and engineering, the energy sector and policymaking. The programme is also suited for students looking to undertake a higher degree in environmental science
Programme details
The summer school takes place from Monday 1 July - Friday 19 July 2019, and the programme is divided into the following components:
The keynote talks will be delivered by leading academics in the fields of Environmental Sciences, Green Chemistry and Biology as well as contributions from University of York's researchers and external speakers. These talks will provide the foundation of the programme with discussion sessions and trips helping students to further explore the key themes.
These seminar-style sessions usually follow the keynote talks and allow students to discuss the themes in greater depth.
These sessions will help students develop their understanding of the talks by applying theory to a range of practical problems in collaboration with other participants, through critical evaluation.
These sessions will equip students with the academic communication skills needed to participate in discussions, as well as help prepare students for trips and poster presentations.
There will be visits to key sites and industries which are linked to the keynote talks, offering hands-on experience.
A weekend visit to London, home to many of the UK's most famous cultural landmarks.
