Skills Guides

The Library Skills Guides are videos, interactive tutorials, workbooks and links to help develop your digital and information searching skills. Useful ones for this term might be:

Use the e-resources chosen for your subject by the Academic Liaison Librarians or search the catalogue for many thousands of ebooks and e-journals. Get a head start on your revision by checking out past papers:

Writing and language skills resources

The Writing and Language Skills Centre has online resources supporting language development, including information on:

  • Grammar
  • Academic vocabulary
  • Presentation skills
  • Research skills

They also have online dissertation support with tips on preparing and writing your dissertation.

Maths skills resources

The Maths Skills Centre has online maths and statistics resources on the VLE, including information on:

  • Statistics (SPSS, R and STATA)
  • Numerical reasoning

Online training and workshops

Digital skills

Digital skills training workshops are going ahead. Some may be self-directed sessions, such as slide decks and workbooks, or there may be video delivery at specified times. Sessions this week are:

  • Making sense of academic sources
  • Using Google Forms as a survey tool

Join the York Online Dissertation Community. The welcome session is on Wednesday 13 May:

  • Access specifically-designed interactive tools and resources for each stage of your dissertation
  • Get advice from academic skills tutors and study coaches

Writing and Language Skills Centre

Book an online appointment with the Writing and Language Skills Centre for one-to-one writing support. This can include:

  • planning and structuring assignments
  • building effective critical arguments
  • integrating source information and data effectively into your writing
  • academic writing style
  • learning to proof-read your own work

They also offer online study coaching appointments to help increase your confidence in approaching your studies.

Maths Skills Centre

Book an online appointment with the Maths Skills Centre to review particular maths topics. You can share your screen (data, workings or software output) during these meetings.
