PAL in a Pandemic

Dr Jess Hargreaves (Department of Mathematics) and her team have published a paper which looks at how Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) schemes supported groups of mathematics students with their studies during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With her colleagues Sue Russell (Learning Enhancement, University of York) and Claire Ketnor and Ellen Marshall (Sheffield Hallam University), Jess found that while students and staff alike are looking forward to in-person contact to provide them with interactions and easier methods of communication, the remote provision for peer support has real value in terms of accessibility and inclusivity. The paper also looks at aspects of PAL that could be taken forward to a blended or in-person approach in the future. The paper was published in the

International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology. Access the paper here.
