Course Overview

The Department of Education welcomes a diverse range of graduate trainees on to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course. Working in partnership with a number of local schools, we have developed a strong PGCE course in which school teachers and university tutors share the responsibility for teacher training and education.

Our PGCE programmes offer training in postgraduate secondary teaching across the 11-16 years age range. Training and learning is provided for whole school issues and relevant curriculum areas. This is a full-time and non-modular course lasting one year. Please use the navigation bar to explore our key programme elements in more detail. We also offer a Post-16 Enhancement to provide trainees with a range of experiences to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills for teaching at Post-16.

Our programmes are designed to blend university study and school experience via placements. Trainees spend two-thirds of the course in schools and have experience in at least three different schools.

We will be recruiting for trainees from October 2023 to begin their studies in September 2024.
