A community of purpose

We are a community that cultivates personal growth and supports each student in developing a vision for their future.

Together:

  • we maintain a welcoming community, where people of all backgrounds and identities can explore and develop their values, motivations and aspirations
  • we provide activities and opportunities that prepare students for fulfilling lives, ready to make a difference for public good
  • we are a University for public good, and we make a positive contribution to the communities we operate in both within York, as well as regionally, nationally and around the globe

You can expect the University:

  • to welcome you into an active and supportive York community
  • to provide, and support York Students’ Union to provide, opportunities for you to get involved in societies, volunteering, sports, social activities and experiences that will enrich your development
  • to provide you with opportunities and support beyond your graduation as a member of York For Life
  • to provide employability programmes and professional support that will help you build your career
  • to provide a range of effective services that support you with issues that may impact on your studies and student experience

As a student member of the University, you are expected:

  • to be considerate of the needs of others, and contribute to the maintenance of a supportive community
  • as far as you are able to, use the University’s resources and wider opportunities outside your course to build skills, explore values, and shape your future
  • familiarise yourself with the support available at the University, be mindful of your own health and wellbeing, and seek support where needed
