Production and management practices in the food, water and waste sectors are of increasing public concern. There is growing pressure to deliver environmentally sustainable, cost-effective and socially responsible solutions.

We engage with key stakeholders in these sectors to identify bottlenecks and challenges, then work collaboratively across disciplines to build new ways of working for everyone.

Research in this area especially aligns with the global sustainable development goals of Responsible consumption and production; and Sustainable cities and communities.

Research theme aims

  • Achieve global research into sustainable resources recovery from waste
  • Deliver integrated solutions to improve food and water quality

Key focus areas

  • Value from waste - develop methods to selectively recover metals from diluted wastes; and improve all aspects of biorefining and plastics recycling

  • Holistic approaches - identify and work with stakeholders in governance and policy to promote stewardship of food and water production

  • Societal engagement - communicate across disciplinary areas to provoke discussion and behaviour change in neglected audiences
