MSc Accounting and Management

Year of entry: 2025 (September)
Through the MSc Accounting and Management, you will learn how to make effective contributions to ensure that the strategic and financial objectives of organisations operating in the international business environment are achieved.
You will critically analyse complex local and global business scenarios by applying contemporary accounting and management theories, whilst taking into account ethical and sustainable managerial practices.
You will expand your knowledge in accounting and management, develop key critical skills to inform business strategies and decision-making in a dynamic and evolving global context. As a consequence, by the end of this programme, you will be well prepared for a range of leadership positions in accounting and management, whilst maintaining ethical values and professional acumen.

Course content
You'll study a range of core modules, consolidating your existing knowledge and introducing you to new concepts and techniques. You'll focus on the role of accounting and finance in organisational management and gain a thorough grounding in accounting, finance, financial management, financial reporting, financial markets, investment and risk.

- Apply key accounting theories and concepts to prepare financial statements within current regulatory frameworks
- Interpret financial information to support strategic decision-making taking into account relevant ethical, societal and sustainability considerations
- Identify, devise, and critically appraise, alternative approaches to accounting and management problems based on systematic analysis of complex business scenarios, while taking into account ethical and sustainable practices
- Inform robust business decision-making by communicating, orally or in written form, complex financial and non-financial information in a clear and accessible manner to professional audiences
- Critically analyse and respond to the complexity of ethical, sustainability and legal issues in accounting, management, governance and the international business environment by devising and applying appropriate investigative methods from a range of research paradigms
- Independently produce focused research into significant accounting and management issues by deploying research tools, analysing the resulting data and synthesising the results into a detailed critical analysis
- Critically reflect on their learning process, personal strengths and weaknesses, in order to identify areas for personal and professional development to work more effectively in a diverse and international business environment.

Teaching location
You will be based in the School for Business and Society on Campus West. Most of your teaching will take place in the Church Lane Building, with additional contact hours elsewhere on Campus East and Campus West.
About our campus
Our beautiful green campus offers a student-friendly setting in which to live and study, within easy reach of the action in the city centre. It's easy to get around campus - everything is within walking or pedalling distance, or you can always use the fast and frequent bus service.
Assessment and feedback
Your modules are assessed with a mixture of exams, essays and presentations. You'll also complete formative assignments including presentations and literature reviews. You'll receive feedback on all the work you submit, helping you to understand your strengths and identify areas for improvement.
Your final assessment is a 10,000-word dissertation or an 8,000-word project, which makes up a third of your overall grade.
Careers and skills
This course will help build your qualifications for a career in financial management or accountancy. Our graduates are developing careers in management roles worldwide. Many go on to work for one of the 'big four': Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PwC, and KPMG.
The skills that you will develop are in demand far beyond the financial services industry. Our alumni can be found in diverse small and medium enterprises and in public sector roles in local government, education, policing and health.
Each year, some of our students choose to continue their studies, joining the School for Business and Society doctoral programme.
