Global reputation

York is one of the success stories in UK higher education. Founded in 1963, we consistently achieve a high ranking in the UK and are one of just a handful of post-war universities to have appeared in the world top 100.

We're also a member of the Russell Group, a partnership of 24 leading UK universities committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience, and excellent links with business and the public sector.

Research-led teaching

We're one of the world's premier institutions for inspirational and groundbreaking research. In the most recent assessment of UK research (REF 2014) we were 14th overall and 10th* for the impact of our research.

We also had one of the highest rankings for four-star world-leading research. This feeds directly into our teaching and you’ll work with staff at the forefront of developments in their subject area, who are committed to extending these advancements to others through their teaching.

"I would never have got my current job without doing my Masters. Even though I'm now in a completely different field - it proved that I could work at this level. I love my job! I help lead the team here at OggaDoon in an international company that partners with world-leading innovative technology companies, start-ups, SMEs, and big corporates, both here in the UK and across Europe. I balance that with being a bestselling Amazon author under the name Emily Murdoch - in medieval historical fiction, of course."

Emily Perkins, Creative Content Manager, OggaDoon (MA in Medieval Studies)

Graduate Students' Association (GSA)

We're one of only a few universities in the UK to have an independent student-led organisation specifically for postgraduates.

The GSA is led by a team of elected officers who are all York students or recent graduates. They're here to help you make the most of your time at York.
