Due to planned maintenance, our accommodation application system will be unavailable all day on Wednesday 1 May. The system is planned to reopen on the morning of Thursday 2 May. You won’t be able to apply for accommodation at York during this time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

If you'd like to talk to us about your application or booking, you can email us at accommodation@york.ac.uk or give us a call on +44 (0)1904 322165.

Applying

You're guaranteed an offer of a single-occupancy room in accommodation owned, managed or approved by the University if you apply for accommodation for the full academic year 2024/25, and meet the following criteria:

  • You're a new postgraduate-taught (UK or International).
  • You accept an offer to study at York, and apply for accommodation by 5pm BST on 31 July 2024.
  • Your study offer becomes unconditional by 2 August 2024.
  • Once you have accepted a full-time course offer, you will be able to apply for 2024/25 accommodation.
  • You’ll need your You@york login details, you can find these in your course offer email.
  • You will need to complete all of the steps in the application before being able to submit it.
  • If you are a returning postgraduate student for the 2024/25 academic year, you can submit an application for 2024/25 accommodation.
  • It can take up to 48 hours for accepted course offers to transfer to our system.
  • Make sure you have cleared your browser history and closed all of your browsers, then try to apply again. This usually clears any issues with the application.
  • Make sure you have selected a minimum of 5 room preferences, and you don't have any filters enabled so you can see all of the options.

If you are still having issues with submitting your accommodation application, please contact us at accommodation@york.ac.uk.

Unfortunately, we do not offer group bookings as part of our application process.

Unfortunately, we do not offer single gender accommodation at the University of York.

Facilities

All of our accommodation is heated, it is turned off once the weather warms up in spring. We hope you're comfortable in your room, but it's always nice to have a blanket or big hoodie to hand for extra cosiness. Portable heaters aren't allowed.

Unfortunately, we don't allow personal kitchen appliances to be brought onto campus. In your kitchen, you'll be provided with all of the essentials such as a fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster.

Additional requirements

When you submit your accommodation application you will have the chance to include details on what your additional requirements are, what room type you feel you need and to upload supporting medical evidence. If we need more information from you, we will be in touch to discuss this further.

If you are struggling to upload documents to your accommodation application, please submit the application as normal, including any comments you want us to see, and send your documents to us as an email attachment instead at accommodation@york.ac.uk.

Yes, if you're completing an Additional Requirements Supporting Evidence Form, it's no problem to complete it by hand and scan it in to attach to your accommodation application.

Room offer

You have seven days from the date the accommodation offer is sent, to accept or reject it. If you don’t do either, the offer will expire and your application will be rejected.

We're sorry to hear you didn't receive your top accommodation choice. We process and allocate rooms using a mass allocator that works it's way through your preferences based on what's available. Unfortunately, your first preference was not available at the time of your application being processed.

If you reject your accommodation offer, you can resubmit your accommodation application. However, we may not be able to offer you an alternative one and we can’t confirm a timeline for when we may be able to send you another offer.

Offers are being sent out in batches so make sure you check your emails regularly so you don’t miss anything from us.

We are currently prioritising offers for students who meet our accommodation guarantee. Check if you are eligible for the accommodation guarantee.

If you would like to swap rooms, you'll need to find another booking holder who is the same student type as yourself and is happy to take over your room type and let length. Use our accommodation adverts web page to advertise your room swap. If you find somebody to swap with, you'll both need to complete the Request to Swap form. Unfortunately, bookings for Student Castle York cannot be swapped for a room on campus.

Student Castle accommodation

  • International students with a UK guarantor will pay an initial £250 deposit when accepting the contract, then their accommodation fees in three instalments.
  • International students without a UK guarantor will pay an initial £250 deposit when accepting their contract, then full payment at the start of the academic year.

Arrivals

If your course has a start date which is earlier than the accommodation booking, you can still accept your offer and we will be in touch in the summer with details on temporary accommodation.

Unfortunately, due to existing let end dates and cleaning requirements we will not be able to bring the dates of your booking forward.

Please contact Student Castle directly to inquire about an earlier arrival date. If they are unable to facilitate this, we would advise looking into temporary accommodation until your contract starts.
