Re-connecting with the careers team
Online careers resources
Check out our careers content, including:
- What do you actually do? podcast - interviews with people working in different types of jobs
- Training opportunities on LinkedIn learning, available via York for Life
Plus, you can continue to access a range of valuable careers sites! Get your alumni email address if you haven’t already, to keep accessing:
- CareerSet - immediate feedback on your CV or cover letter
- Shortlist.Me - try out mock video interviews
- Team Focus - online questionnaires, on areas such as personality types and learning styles, which may help you to consider roles that could suit you
- AssessmentDay - practice numerical and diagrammatic reasoning tests
Appointments
We offer Graduate Careers Advice appointments, bookable via Handshake. These are with one of our Careers Consultants, and take place via Zoom.
If you did a PhD at York, you could book a Postgraduate Research Student Careers appointment with our Careers Consultant for PGRs.
What can I use the appointment for?
- Reflect on your current position and, if applicable, your work history
- Target your information search and plan your next steps
- Consider career choices and gain support with your decision making
- Get advice on preparing for your interview or assessment centre
- Deal with unsuccessful job applications, identifying problems and finding solutions
- Consider ways to maximise your current career opportunities
- Consider solutions to barriers you feel are impacting on your career goals
Are there any exceptions?
Exceptions to this include graduate access to appointments at busy periods, when priority will be given to current students. If you are currently studying at another university, you should use their careers service.
Supported career planning
Some eligible recent graduates may apply for our Supported career planning programme. Please check carefully to see if you meet the eligibility criteria before applying.
There are also coaching or graduate development programmes available for unemployed or under-employed graduates living in West Yorkshire: Graduates West Yorkshire.
Using Handshake

What can I do on Handshake?
- Apply for roles from approved employers
- Refine your search by your preferred job types and locations, to find opportunities tailored to your preferences
- Send us questions or book an appointment
- Connect with potential employers, enriching your professional network
How can I log in?
If you're a recent graduate (2020 or later), you’ll already have an account in Handshake. We'll convert your student account to alumni status, with your personal email (if supplied). If you have any problems accessing Handshake, please email careers@york.ac.uk with your name, degree and course dates.
If you graduated before summer 2020, you can register on Handshake by clicking on the 'Sign up here' link. When asked for your email address you should input your personal address - it does not need to be a University of York one (despite the instructions on screen).
