Cars and parking

While we think our campus is a great place to walk, cycle or get the bus to, we recognise that some students may need to drive.

Even if you’re not eligible for a permit, you can still use our pay-and-display car parks. Parking costs £1 per hour up to four hours or £6 for the day. Parking is free between 6.00pm and 8.00am, weekends and bank holidays.

If you only need to park somewhere for a short time there are several delivery and short stay bays across campus where you can park free of charge for up to an hour (return prohibited within one hour) without displaying a pay and display ticket or parking permit. See the locations of these bays: FOC short stay motorcycle and disabled bays locations (PDF , 276kb).

Disability and Special Circumstances

We provide Disabled parking bays (see where they are on campus in this map: FOC short stay motorcycle and disabled bays locations (PDF , 276kb)) within each main car park on campus and at locations close to certain key buildings. These spaces are designated for vehicles displaying a Blue or University disability (Orange) badge.

If you have medical or welfare issues which mean use of a car is essential but you do not meet parking permit criteria or hold a badge, then apply for a ‘Special Circumstances’ or University Disability permit by putting forward a case to Student Support Services. Email student-hub@york.ac.uk for more information. Please note these permits will not be issued to students who want to use their car to travel to outside activities involving hobbies or paid employment.
