Module aims

This module aims to introduce a range of possible approaches to applied business research, understanding that both qualitative and quantitative approaches are needed in order to be able to critically evaluate management practice. It is also relevant to you as students on the online Masters programme with the requirement to fulfil an independent research project, as the module will introduce you to the process and outcomes of good quality academic research.

Module learning outcomes

To enable students to critically explore and be able to:

  • Discuss the underlying philosophies, theoretical principles, methods and techniques applicable to research in business and management
  • Explain the key characteristics of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research in business and management studies
  • Recognise how to craft research questions/hypotheses appropriate to an area of research interest
  • Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses different approaches to research in business and management
  • Recommend ethical, legal and safety considerations when conducting business/management research
  • Propose relevant research methodologies and methods to specific business/management problems
