Module aims

Note: This document uses the word 'women’ throughout. This should be taken to include people who do not identify as women but are pregnant or who have given birth.

To provide supportive, supernumerary practice learning opportunities that enable students to participate in care:

  • understand the role and scope of the midwife working within maternity care services, including interdisciplinary and multi agency working

  • develop the required knowledge, skills and behaviours to provide universal midwifery care and additional care for women and newborn infants and families with complications.

  • promote and provide continuity of care and carer

  • professionally develop towards meeting the midwifery skills outlined within the NMC (2019) Standards of proficiency for midwives and the learning outcomes within the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) Standards.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate progression towards the identified proficiencies for Stage two in the eMORA.

  2. Demonstrate they are able to contribute with decreasing supervision and direction, all relevant proficiencies identified in the eMORA document.

  3. Achieve UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) themes and learning outcomes as specified for Stage Two/in the eMORA.

  4. Demonstrate proficiency with drug calculations, using Safe-Medicate.

Note: Practice learning equates to 50% of the overall BMid (Hons) programme and a minimum of 2,300 practice learning hours will be evidenced over the three years. It is anticipated that students will achieve 800 practice learning hours in this module. A practice learning week will total 40 hours, comprising 37.5 hours verified by an NMC registrant and a maximum of 2.5 hours student self-declared time for reflection/professional development/completion of evidence of proficiencies within the eMORA/attendance at relevant practice learning events.

This module is a practice module which spans across stage 2. A total of 800 practice hours should be achieved by the end of the module.

Verbal and written evidence of achievement is provided within the student’s eMORA, verified by discussion with the Practice Assessor (PA) and Academic Assessor (AA).
