Prior to your resumption date, you will be contacted with the appropriate re-enrolment information and any conditions of return that you need to satisfy, eg meeting academic requirements.

If you are unclear about any assessments you have been asked to complete before returning from leave, this is always a query for your department (you should speak with the module leader, your supervisor or your course administrator).

You will also need to make sure you’ve paid any outstanding debts to the University before re-enrolling.

You are not permitted to return to studies until any outstanding conditions have been met and you are fully enrolled at York.

Any conditions of return will be communicated to you at the time your leave of absence is processed and again in the weeks leading up to your return. You will be emailed at this time detailing the deadline for your enrolment.

If you fail to enrol by the date stated, you may be withdrawn from University. If you have any trouble with the enrolment process please contact student-records@york.ac.uk.

This information does not apply to students studying 100% online on a York Online programme. If you are studying on a York Online programme, please go to York Online Programmes: taking time out for more information about taking a break.

To make sure that you have funding in place ready for your return from leave of absence, if you are a UK (home) student you would need to re-apply for Student Finance for the academic year in which you plan to return. It is advisable to apply at least 8 weeks before you are due to return. Applications for each year of Student Finance open the preceding Spring (March/April) every year, so you can apply as early as you like.

When you return from your leave the University will notify your funding provider that you have resumed your studies. This will trigger the release of any funding available to you at this time.

Finding accommodation

On Campus Accommodation
  • Re-starting from Year 1: If you are going to be starting your course or a new course from year 1 you can apply for first year, UG accommodation on campus. In order to do this please contact the accommodation team directly.
  • Continuing returning students: limited accommodation is available on campus for returning students. To check whether this is an option on your return or to be added to the waiting list please contact the accommodation team directly.
Private Sector Accommodation
  • We would advise looking for accommodation early whether your return date is at the beginning of an academic year or part-way through a year.
  • You can look for availability through local student housing letting agents as well as looking out for spare rooms being advertised in shared student houses.
  • Some private student accommodation providers have shorter let lengths but these are less common.

For further guidance with campus accommodation, please contact our accommodation team. For further guidance on options in the private sector, please contact the student support and advice team
