Secure your bike for summer
Posted on Thursday 16 April 2026
You may not be able to take your bicycle with you if you leave York over the summer, but if you want to leave it on campus, make sure we know.
What you need to do
- Go to your nearest reception (see list below) and ask for a summer storage tag, fill in the date and year of when you will return to collect your bike.
- It is your responsibility to secure your bike in a bike shed or secure hoop and to make sure it has a summer storage tag attached to it.
- If you have any questions, please email your nearest reception.
This year, you can collect a summer storage tag from any of the following locations:
- Anne Lister College reception
- David Kato College reception
- Ron Cooke Hub
- Piazza Mailroom
- Information Centre
- Students' Union office
- Mailroom on Campus West
Abandoned bicycles
If you do not put a summer storage tag on your bicycle, we may consider it to be abandoned. If we deem a bicycle to be abandoned we will put a red band on the frame, asking the owner to remove the bicycle, or the red band (if you're still using the bike). If the bike or band isn't removed within 28 days the bike will be taken away. The University cannot be held liable for damage to locks.
Recycling
All bikes deemed abandoned are sent to eBike Medic to be refurbished and re-sold at a reduced price at the Bike Doctor events on campus. Bikes are kept by eBike Medic for 14 days before any work is done to recycle them.
Finishing University and not taking your bike with you? If you’re unable to take your bike home, or would simply prefer not to - we’re happy to accept bike donations. Get in touch with transport-team@york.ac.uk for more information or to arrange a collection.
