Remembrance events and a vigil for peace

Posted on 9 November 2023

Members of the University are invited to mark Remembrance Day, and to take part in a Vigil for Peace.

Saturday 11 November is Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of World War One.

We invite all members of our community to pause what you are doing at 11am to observe a two-minute silence in memory of those who have lost their lives or had their lives affected by war. Please be aware that some of our services may pause briefly to enable staff to take part in the silence. If you decide not to accept this invitation, we ask you to respect those who do wish to take part.

York Minster is holding a Service of Commemoration for Armistice Day on Saturday 11 November, at 10.55am which is open to the public.

On Sunday 12 November, VC Charlie Jeffery and YUSU Chief Executive Ben Vulliamy will join the city’s Remembrance Sunday Parade and ceremony and will lay two wreaths of poppies on behalf of all members of the University community. This is a symbol of both remembrance and hope for a peaceful future.

If you wish to donate to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, which supports veterans and their families, you can do so by buying a poppy in person (on campus or elsewhere) or donating online:

A vigil for peace

The continuing conflict in Israel and Gaza, with its violence and terrible loss of life, is at the forefront of people’s minds and we understand that many of you would like to show support for those currently being affected by war.

On Saturday 11 November, at 6.30pm, York Minster is hosting a Vigil for peace in Israel and Gaza with reflections to be shared by political, civic and religious leaders from across the city. Professor Avtar Matharu of Chemistry will be speaking in his role as Chair of York Interfaith Group. Members of the public, including staff and students, are welcome to attend.
