Timetable and start of term changes

Posted on 6 February 2013

In response to feedback from departments and York students, the University has decided to make two fundamental changes to the academic year. We would like to explain the changes and what they will mean to you at York.

Changes to the start of the academic year 2013/14

The academic year 2013/14 will start one week earlier. This means the next academic year will start 30 September 2013, a date which aligns better with other institutions.

This move will provide a longer winter break for staff and students, allow travel abroad with less risk of having to pay premium fares, and allow you to be available at the same time as other students for summer internships and vacation work.

Welcome and orientation for 2013 will take place over a one week period for 2013 meaning 1st year undergraduate and postgraduate students will arrive in the same weekend. Combining welcome and orientation for all new students into week one will be a one year only event, as we adjust to having an earlier start date for the Autumn term.

For returning students the full teaching timetable for Autumn term will recommence from Monday 7 October 2013.

Changes to the taught timetable 2013/14

From the beginning of the next academic year, teaching activities on Heslington West and King’s Manor will begin on the hour from 9am to 6pm. Teaching activities on Heslington East will start at half past the hour and will run from 9.30 to 6.30pm.

Travelling time between campuses have been factored into the revisions.  The new arrangement will reduce the time spent travelling between Heslington East and West, and will be supported by revised bus timetables to, from and around campus.

The University teaching timetable for 2013/4 will be available via the Student Homepage on 26 June 2013, prior to the Summer break.

We hope you will find these to be positive changes.
