Want to know more about the generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools people keep talking about? Interested in if generative AI tools might be used, or not, as part of your research process, and what this might mean for research in the future?
In this introductory session, we will explore some of the concepts behind generative AI tools like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot and which tools are supported at the University of York. We will look at what these tools can actually do and what they aren't so good at, and discuss some of the benefits and issues when using these tools as part of the research process. We'll also highlight relevant University of York guidance around the use of generative AI for researchers.
You do not need any knowledge of artificial intelligence to attend this session.
This session is not going to cover:
- building your own generative AI tools
- writing code for machine learning

Learning objectives
- Be aware of what artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI is and what it isn't.
- Be aware of different generative AI tools and services and understand which are available to researchers at York.
- Understand some of the ways that generative AI tools might be used as part of the research process and be able to critically evaluate the effectiveness of these tools for research.
- Be able to consider some of the ethical and practical concerns around generative AI, particularly relating to how it might be used in academic research.
