Searching the Literature

This workshop is designed to help PGRs and research staff to search for scholarly literature with confidence. It is particularly relevant to PhD students collecting scholarly papers for their literature review but the search skills covered can be applied in a range of contexts. The workshop will look at stages in the literature search process, from an overview of planning a search, through developing an effective research strategy, to obtaining access to the literature identified. There will be opportunities for hands-on experience of using University of York online resources relevant to your subject area and using your own research topic. Learning objectives:
- Know how to plan a search and develop an effective research strategy
- Recognise the range of search tools available and be aware of their strengths and weaknesses
- Be able to conduct an effective search on multiple tools utilising advanced search techniques
- Know how to access texts located through a search
