Learning pathway: Empowering growth and coaching

This learning pathway is for managers and reviewers.

The University’s PDR process has shifted away from top-down mandates toward collective accountability. As a manager, your role is to foster an environment of psychological safety and professional growth.

The modules in this pathway are designed to build your confidence in leading high-impact PDRs. They will teach you how to transition from an evaluator to a coach. They also align with the University's Community Without Limits Framework, helping you focus on behaviours that drive collective success.

Introduction to the PDR Framework

The PDR process has been revamped for the 2026 cycle. This video looks at the new approach and what's changed.

Watch: Introduction to the PDR Framework

Module 1: From rating to coaching

Moving away from traditional 1–5 numerical scales to prioritise quality dialogue. By removing labels, you eliminate unconscious bias, promote equity, and focus on future aspirations.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to establish psychological safety in PDR conversations.
  • Techniques for delivering honest, developmental feedback without the friction of numerical ratings.

Module 2: The art of the continuous conversation

PDR is a continuous cycle, not a one-off annual meeting. This module helps you move toward year-round check-ins so there are no surprises at year-end.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to structure lightweight, regular check-ins throughout the 12-month cycle.
  • Balancing ‘looking back’ to celebrate success with ‘looking forward’ to plan development.

Module 3: Overcoming performance barriers together

Waiting until the annual review to address a performance gap is unfair to everyone. Early intervention gives your team members the tools and structured support they need to succeed.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to spot early signs of performance drift and address them constructively.
  • How to implement supportive Performance Development Plans early and transparently.
