Professor John Helliwell

I was a York Physics student before being appointed to Lecturer in Physics between October 1985 - December 1988. Although I had a permanent appointment in the Physics Department, I was invited to apply and was appointed to be Professor of Structural Chemistry in the University of Manchester which commenced in January 1989 in the Chemistry Department.

Upon my graduation in 1974 with 1st class Hons in Physics, Professor Oliver Heavens (previous head of Department) supported my application to join the IOP. Later, I was admitted as a Fellow of the IOP during my time on the Physics staff in 1986. I am currently serving the IOP on its Fellows' Admissions Panel, and have done so for approx. 5 years. I was also Chairman of the Manchester and District Branch of the IOP from 1990 - 1995. I submitted for my DSc Physics degree, at the suggestion of Prof Jim Matthew, in 1993 and received my DSc in Physics in 1996.

Recently, I was awarded the 8th Max Perutz Prize of the European Crystallographic Association for which I was interviewed by The International Union of Crystallography, reflecting on my career, achievements and my time as a York Physics undergraduate and staff member; you can watch the ECM29 opening ceremony here.

I also won the 2014 American Crystallographic Association Patterson Award. In response to this I wrote an ACA Living History Autobiography, which is shared with the American Institute of Physics.

I recently wrote a book entitled 'Perspectives in Crystallography', which is now on sale.
