The Fairhurst Study Doubling areaa

Study Doubling

Study Doubling (or Body Doubling) is when two (or more) people work side by side without necessarily collaborating. It’s not about brainstorming or bouncing ideas around. It’s about showing up, being present, and doing the work while someone else is doing theirs. It may sound simple, but the effects can be powerful. Just having another person in your virtual or physical space provides an accountability anchor that helps keep you on task. The key is the silent accountability and the sense of companionship. Two people work side by side in the same room.

Where in the library can I Study Double?

We have designated two spaces in the library as Study Doubling areas:

  • 6 desks are available on the Fairhurst floor 2,  in between LFA/214 and the lift area
  • 10 desks are available at the back of room LMO/211 on Morrell, floor 2

How do I set up a session?

In both areas, desks are arranged in pairs and booking is not required. Some large-format sand timers are available on an adjacent desk to use if you wish. Please return the timers at the end of any doubling session.

There are two ways of setting up a session:

  • Planned session - bring a friend and come to study as a pair
  • Ad hoc session - come along to the Study Doubling space and see if anyone is awaiting a partner, or sit at one of the Study Doubling desks and see if someone joins you. We suggest popping one of our timers on your desk to indicate you are open to doubling with someone. Someone may or may not join you. You are not obliged to communicate with your Study Double partner.

Who can use these spaces?

Please note that these spaces are open to all and are not for the exclusive use of those who are Study Doubling. We’ve designated two areas so that we have a location to provide information about this technique and some equipment to support students who wish to double. Study Doubling is a very flexible technique, and you can use it in many of our other library study spaces too.

The Benefits of Body Doubling

Our Body Doubling spaces are a result of the winning entry for our LibInspo competition in 2025, from Jocelyn Macnab. Although body doubling can be especially useful for students with ADHD, it can be universally useful, and there are many benefits of body doubling. These include:

Enhanced Focus and Productivity
For many neurodivergent individuals, the presence of a body double can create a structured environment conducive to concentration. The accountability of having someone nearby can reduce distractions and procrastination.

Reduced Feelings of Isolation
Working alone can be isolating, especially for those who thrive in social settings. Body doubling offers a sense of companionship, making work feel less lonely and more enjoyable.

Improved Task Initiation and Completion
Neurodivergent individuals can often struggle with starting tasks. Body doubling can provide the nudge needed to begin and sustain work. Knowing someone else is working alongside can make daunting tasks feel more manageable.

Greater Sense of Accountability
Having a body double creates an unspoken accountability. It’s harder to deviate from tasks when someone else is present, fostering a sense of duty and commitment.

Enhanced Emotional Well-Being
The psychological benefits of having a supportive presence can reduce anxiety and stress, promoting overall mental health and well-being.
