Skills for Science
All of our activities support children to think and work like scientists while working on topics within the primary science curriculum. However, the resources on this page are particularly useful for teaching working scientifically skills.
Videos and guidance
CIEC have created a series of high-quality videos and guidance, featuring teachers and children working scientifically in their classrooms from Year 1 to Year 6. Each video is designed to support teachers in the delivery of the Working Scientifically aspects of the national curriculum, and increase teacher confidence to explore children's ideas and develop their practical skills and disciplinary knowledge.
The videos accompany the Oak National Academy science curriculum, launched in 2024, created by the CIEC team in partnership with Oak. The full set of primary science resources can be accessed here:
Role Badges
Role badges have been used by CIEC advisory teachers for many years. Due to their popularity with teachers, who comment how they promote team work amongst groups of children and lead to well ordered, productive practical lessons we are now making them available as a stand alone resource.
Working Scientifically
CIEC's Working Scientifically in the Primary Classroom supports all aspects of science enquiry from Early Years through Primary to Key Stage Three within the science curriculum for England. It contains progression grids, guidance and child friendly self and peer assessment posters.
The publication has been updated to reflect recent changes to EYFS curriculum guidance.
This resource is now available to purchase through the University of York's Online Store.
With special thanks to the Salters' Institute for funding this resource.
