Coexistence from the arts

Event details
Despite much research on what is needed to conserve biodiversity and promote human-wildlife coexistence, we struggle to achieve positive outcomes in practice. We believe one reason is that researchers do not work together with sufficient creativity across disciplines. Our project fills a research gap by building bridges between natural and social scientists and UK and Costa Rican artists to explore how incorporating art into research can lead to proenvironmental behaviours in human–wildlife coexistence contexts.
In this event, three UK artists – visual artist Gina Allen, storyteller Tim Ralphs, audio artist Kitty Turner – will share creative outputs reflecting on people and wildlife and how we share space with each other. Through the microcosm of biodiversity and wildlife on the University of York’s campus, our ‘Creative lab’ has invited the team to experiment with how art-led (re)imagining in research design, data collection and outputs could promote emotional and social learning. Through this immersive event, we will also invite members of the public and the university community to reflect on their own learning and behaviours towards more-than-humans. All are most welcome!
This project is financed by the YESI Fellows scheme and is co-funded by the University of York's Department of Politics and International Relations DRC pump-priming fund (10002304).
A light supper will be provided.
