English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you may be asked to provide evidence of your English language ability to the required level, in addition to any academic entry requirements.

If you've not met our English language requirements

We offer a range of pre-sessional English language courses which can be used for entry to degree-level courses.

You can apply online once you receive and accept your offer. These courses are popular, so apply early to avoid disappointment.

To ensure the qualifications you are studying or have studied are considered suitable for entry to York, please check the relevant country-specific information.

Pre-Masters pathway courses

For some of our Masters courses, if you do not meet the entry requirements you can prepare via a Pre-Masters pathway course in York or London. If you successfully complete the course to the required level you will be guaranteed a place on your chosen Masters degree at York.

If you require a Student Visa

If you require a Student Visa to study in the UK, you will need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

You can request your CAS after you have accepted an offer. We can issue your CAS once your offer becomes unconditional, and not longer than six months before your course starts. You may need to pay a tuition fee deposit at that point.

Key dates and deadlines

The deadline to request your CAS to start studying in autumn 2024 is 11.59 BST on 4 September 2024.

The last date we will issue a CAS to start studying in autumn 2024 is 16 September 2024.
