Welcome to your taught postgraduate student news summary of key things happening this week.

UoY community update

Library open 8am until midnight
Now the Common Assessment Period has ended, the Library has reverted to its usual opening hours of 8am - midnight.

Make sure you’re up to date with your vaccinations
The UK Healthy Security Agency has recently reported a re-emergence of meningitis B. Meningitis symptoms, which may not all be present, include:

• severe headache
• dislike of bright light
• neck stiffness
• nausea and vomiting
• confusion and drowsiness
• convulsions/seizures
• red/purple rash which does not fade on pressure

All students should be up to date with vaccinations against Covid-19, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and meningococcal MenACWY vaccines. Arrange these with your doctor. Find out more about infectious illnesses.

1. Come to the Graduate Jobs Fair

If you are about to graduate, the Graduate Jobs Fair on Wednesday 15 June is a must for you. Suitable for undergraduate finalists and postgraduate students completing their studies this summer, meet employers who are recruiting to fill current vacancies and explore possible options for your next step after graduation. There’s the chance to get your CV checked, see our work wardrobe, and get your photo taken for your LinkedIn profile! Register for the Graduate Jobs Fair.

2. Academic writing: a practical guide

Our online Academic Writing practical guide is packed full of guides, tutorials and videos to help you develop all aspects of academic writing. The advice covers style, structure, critical analysis, planning and much more! See our online Academic writing guide.

3. Digital tools for research

The Digital Wednesdays workshop series is looking at digital tools for research. Join the ‘Wonderful ways of working with data in a spreadsheet’ on Wednesday 8 June for help in knowing what to do with data. This is followed by a session on data visualisation and infographics on Wednesday 15 June. How you present your data has a massive impact on audience understanding and engagement and using different data visualisations can also provide you with new insights into your data findings. 4. Looking after your personal safety

We’ve teamed up with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to create some essential training for students to help you think about personal safety, giving you the know-how to assess, manage and reduce risks. Shaped by students for students, the course comes in short, easy-to-watch video segments and focuses on topics such as identifying harassment, stalking awareness, and ways to deal with conflict. 5. Coming soon: York Festival of Ideas (11-24 June)

Don’t miss free in-person and online talks and panel discussions with expert speakers on the war in Ukraine, global health, the potential of chocolate, and more. Meet Oscar-winning film editor Joe Walker (‘Dune’, 2021), who will discuss his career path and reveal what it’s like to work in the film industry. Hear the extraordinary voices of Afghan women writers, and find out how young people like you are shaping the future of democracy in Next Generation Citizens.
