Module summary

All social work students are required to complete a 100 day final placement. Your final placement is designed to prepare you for your first job as a qualified social worker (see End of Final Placement: Student PCF Descriptors).

Module aims

The degree in social work is the standard UK qualification for those seeking to work as social workers. It was introduced in England in 2003 and 2004, replacing the Diploma in Social Work, and has recently undergone significant reforms to strengthen professional practice standards and requirements.

Students are required to spend 200 days in practice learning. This should include three elements –

  • 30 days of skills practice (at York, these are integrated into academic modules throughout the programme, predominantly in year 1);
  • 70 days first placement;
  • 100 days final placement.

This module is the 100 day second placement.

Module content

Practice learning on placement supported by a Practice Educator.

Students are allocated a University Liason who assists the student in setting up a Placement Learning Agreement and confers with the student and Practice Educator at the midway point of the placement. The University Liason is the university contact if there are any issues on placement and will chair and action planning meeting to create an action plan if issues arise.

Additional assessment information

Where a placement has broken down, or a fail recommended, the Independent Practice Panel may recommend that an additional placement is sought for the student. Where this is the case, a replacement placement time-limited protocol will be applied which permits approach to minimum one and maximum three further organisations with a view to securing a placement within a maximum period of four calendar months from the date on which the student is informed of the IPP decision.

Students who have not secured a replacement placement within four months are permitted to withdraw from the programme at that point and prior to their deadline for programme completion. Unless withdrawn, students who fail to secure and complete a replacement placement will be recorded as having failed the module and will therefore not be eligible for the qualifying social work degree award.

Module feedback

Students receive feedback from their Practice Educator as part of the report writing process. Students are informed about their grade (P/F) within 4 weeks of submission. Processes are in place to support the student if the Practice Educator does not feel the student is on track to pass their placement.
