Module aims
This module involves studying Psychology at a University abroad. The Year Abroad module aims to expose students to different perspectives on Psychology as a discipline, and provide them with new insight into how different cultural beliefs can influence societies and the individuals who compose them. This will elevate students’ perceptiveness both in and outside the classroom, and give them an understanding of how psychology is practiced internationally. Students will be challenged to: (i) evaluate topics from culture-specific perspectives that are different from those they are exposed to here at York, (ii) understand how others engage with the same disciplinary material they have encountered in the U.K., and (iii) they will encounter new disciplinary material which they are unfamiliar with. As a result, students will be able to develop cultural intelligence and cross-cultural communication skills which are necessary components in a highly competitive and increasingly international work landscape.
Module learning outcomes
By completing this module, students will:
Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of non-British approaches to the study of the mind, brain and behaviour
Demonstrate an understanding of non-British cultures.
Module content
This module is taken as part of the year abroad on degrees BSc (Hons) in Psychology with study abroad year, and MSci (Hons) in Psychology with study abroad year.
