Module aims

  • This module builds on topics covered in Perception and Cognition 1, with a greater emphasis on higher level perceptual processing, advanced topics in memory and attention. This leads onto how knowledge of the principles of perception and cognition can be applied in the real world.

Module learning outcomes

  • give an account of complex sounds such as music and speech, and their perception as objects in the auditory scene.
  • describe higher areas of visual processing and how these are involved in the perception of size, motion & depth.
  • appreciate what mental representation is and what issues surround uncovering the format of mental representation
  • describe key theories of attention
  • understand the differences between competing theories of object recognition
  • evaluate different theories of memory
  • describe and discuss the application of the psychology of human memory to practical problems such as the reliability of eyewitness testimony

Module content

Year 2 develops a greater emphasis on higher level perceptual processing and more advanced topics in cognitive psychology. This leads onto how knowledge of the principles of perception and cognition can be applied in the real world.
