Module summary

This module builds on Developing Your Artistic Practice 1 by developing your confidence in using scholarly, practical and professional approaches to technique, preparation and interpretation to explore your independent artistic identity.

Module aims

The module aims to equip you with advanced approaches and knowledge to support the development of your independent artistic practice, and the confidence to utilise these independently.

The teaching is through weekly seminars and tutorials including in programme-specific cohorts where appropriate.. Teaching will draw on studies of instrumental and vocal technique and artistic strategies as well as disciplines such as performance studies, historical performance, practice research, musicology, artistic research and music analysis.

Throughout the semester, you will develop a portfolio of case studies or a single extended case study applying methods and ideas developed during the module to your own artistic practice.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Independently find, critically evaluate and utilise a range of relevant sources to develop your own perspective on their repertoire and developing creative practice

  2. Independently utilise a range of knowledge and approaches relevant to your area of practice to develop a personal artistic approach to your repertoire

  3. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the range of existing scholarly research and artistic approaches relevant to your area of practice

  4. Articulate the development of their technical and artistic strategies through performance, writing or presentation

Additional assessment information

EITHER

Portfolio of case studies or single extended case-study in written or audio-visual form, equivalent to 3000 words.

OR

20-25 minute lecture-recital presenting a single extended case-study of a topic or repertoire. The lecture-recital should include a maximum of c.10’ of performance.
