Module summary

This course is aimed at those who have a basic knowledge of the target language. Students at this level may have equivalent knowledge from a Beginners’ course. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

Module aims

The key aim of this course is to further develop your language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Your will communicate in a wider range of daily topics, use more grammatical structures and learn more Chinese characters.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • communicate on familar topics using a variety of speech patterns
  • understand the gist of selected short passages in Chinese character
  • write a short passage on a familiar topic in simple Chinese
  • feel more confident with pronouncing Chinese

Examples of the topics:

  • give/ask for directions, opening hours  
  • describe the location of something
  • make a purchase and bargaining
  • talk about a past situation
  • express a change of state or condition

Module content

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course with an emphasis on everyday situations and on improving fluency and accuracy. Some audio/video-based listening exercise will take place in class. You will be required to obtain a textbook to support your studies.

Module feedback

Students will receive feedback on their formative open paper no later than week 3 of term 2. Individual feedback forms convey information on levels of attainment and advice for improvement on each section of the exam: reading comprehension, grammar and writing.

In addition, regular homework tasks provide opportunities for individual ongoing feedback on achievement and progress.
