Module aims

The module will explore the role of art within Italian society throughout history, from the middle Ages to the present day. Students will acquire knowledge of the history of Italian art, while reflecting on the centrality of its role in Italian culture. They will also gain a better understanding of recent government policies and of the intricate relations between Church and State in the conservation of cultural heritage.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of historical concept and key figures of history of art in Italy
  • Recognize the role of art in shaping Italian history and modern society
  • Develop an understanding of the relationship between art appreciation and the development of Italian society past and present
  • Understand complex written and aural authentic materials related to Italian cultural heritage and art
  • Present and develop arguments effectively in both spoken and written Italian
  • Achieve a good level of accuracy in the production of both written and spoken Italian

Module feedback

Feedback on formative work

Oral commentary and dialogue within class on oral and written language work, given immediately both to individuals and to group.

Oral commentary and dialogue on seminar presentation, given to the individual presenter following the seminar.

Written comments and mark on university scale given to individual students for practice essays, with opportunity for individual consultation. The essays will be returned to students two weeks after seminar.

Indicative reading

Bibliographical references will be supplied during the module. Consultation of Italian daily newspapers and weekly magazines is essential for the students to keep up to date with current issues in Italy.
