Module aims
This module is an introductory undergraduate level course in French grammar.
Module learning outcomes
After satisfactorily completing the module, students should be able to show:
• an increased understanding of the structures of the French language;
• the ability to analyse grammatical points, understand and produce them in context;
• an increased awareness, acquired through revision, practice and intensive self-study, of the use of the grammatical structures used in spoken and written French and of grammar-related issues of particular note in French.
Additionally, students should have developed/ enhanced the following employability skills:
- general communication
- general ICT skills
- general self- and time-management (organising one’s studies)
- team work
- social and intercultural awareness
Module content
All the lessons are conducted as seminars in order to encourage discussion and interaction.
The two hours of contact time will be devoted to a presentation of some key aspects of French grammar and syntax, as well as the completion of related off-line and online exercises (from the workbook and/or other resources).
The medium of instruction is French.
Regular self-study (in the library and/or at home) will be required: students are expected to work on their grammar skills via the completion of exercises, from the workbook and/or other materials available on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
The VLE provides explanations and answers to key exercises, allowing students to organise their self-study more efficiently and concentrate on their particular needs.

Module feedback
Feedback on formative assessment
• Oral commentary and dialogue within class on grammar exercises given immediately both to individuals and whole class.
• Online answers provided with all VLE tasks.
• Model answers may be given for class exercises/ past exam papers, with class discussion of difficulties.
