The Curatorial Internship provides students with the experience of taking their curatorial and art-historical learning into the work environment.

Module aims

The Curatorial Internship provides students with the experience of taking their curatorial and art-historical learning into the work environment. Each student will be assigned to one of the department’s collaborative partners (gallery, museum, historic house etc.) where they will be guided in the working practices of curation relevant to that institution, and deepen their understanding of how the skills and theories developed in academic study relate to the daily work carried out in galleries/related institutions.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, a student should have acquired:

  • understanding of a working environment in which curating takes place;
  • critical awareness of how curatorial theory connects to the specific contexts of an institution and its relation to the public;
  • ability to carry out specialist forms of curatorial writing and record-keeping, such as catalogue entries, object labels, database entries, photographs or other formats;
  • increased understanding of the range of art historical practice which takes place beyond the university.
