Module aims

This module aims to enable practitioners to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for safe performance in the management of minor injuries. The reform of primary and emergency care within the NHS is driving a need for practitioners other than doctors to further the boundaries of their practice and become providers of first contact assessment and care for patients presenting with minor injuries.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Develop knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms and types of minor injury that may occur in the musculoskeletal system, the head, face and eye, the skin, the ear nose and throat.
  2. Develop and apply techniques of history taking and physical examination appropriate to the injured patient.
  3. Critically analyse the evidence based management of minor injuries of the various body systems.
  4. Evaluate the principles of problem solving in making sound clinical judgements and differentiating between minor injuries, minor illness and major injuries.
  5. Integrate knowledge, history taking, problem solving and physical examination skills with sound diagnostic reasoning and patient management in minor injuries care.
  6. Critically appraise the links between role expansion in minor injuries care and issues of accountability and the law that includes a consideration of the injured child and other vulnerable clients.

Module feedback

  • Individual verbal feedback will be provided during clinical examination workshops.
  • Individual written feedback for the formative OSCE will be provided to students in a timely manner after the OSCE.
  • Individual written feedback for the summative OSCE will be provided within the timescale specified in the programme handbook.
  • Students are provided with collective exam feedback relating to their cohort, within the timescale specified in the programme handbook.
