Module aims

  • to introduce students to a complex and lengthy literary text, and to allow for its in-depth study
  • to introduce students to key recent criticism on a Shakespeare play, and to the crucial contexts and history of performance.
  • to enable students to study in detail questions of genre and literary tradition
  • to enable students to develop skills in group work and presentation in relation to a clearly defined thematic focus

Module learning outcomes

  • demonstrate a secure knowledge of a Shakespeare play
  • have developed an appropriate critical vocabulary to discuss the text, and be able to locate it within its historical contexts
  • demonstrate an ability to engage in close-reading of key elements of a lengthy texts, and relate that reading to larger contexts and arguments.
