Module summary

The dissertation is your opportunity to write a sustained critical account (7000-8000 words) on a topic of your choosing (subject to approval).

You are encouraged to extend and develop ideas which have fascinated you within previous modules or to undertake literary research in an area that you have not previously studied. Your project could also be based on creative practice.

At the end of your second year you will be asked to submit a 250-word dissertation proposal so that you can be allocated a dissertation supervisor. In your third year you will attend lectures that guide you through the challenges of identifying a topic, structuring your research, and writing an extended piece of critical prose.

Module aims

This modules aims to enable students to develop key skills in independent research and writing, with appropriate academic guidance and writing support. Students are then encouraged to explore one element of their literary interests in considerable depth, and to further enhance their core skills in research, library and IT use, writing extended critical prose, and transferable skills in communication, time management, and organisation.

• To explore one or more aspects of a subject arising from the course to which the student has subscribed, and to do so in greater depth than would be possible in the assessed modular essays.

Academic and graduate skills

• The student will demonstrate the capacity to devise and execute a project of independent study, and show the ability to undertake research of some originality; the student will be expected to engage with, and on occasion challenge a wide range of secondary sources, to articulate an argument with clarity and precision, and to document their work with scholarly accuracy.
