Module aims

To aid students understanding of the principles and application of CBA by researchers and governments.
In particular, students will be introduced to appropriate analytical frameworks to:

  • Appreciate recent theoretical debate
  • Evaluate empirical evidence
  • Contribute to the current policy debate

Module learning outcomes

To understand the basic principles and introductory application of CBA by researchers and governments, including:

  • Undertaking an elementary cost-benefit analysis in the appraisal of, for example, transport networks, environmental damage.
  • Appreciating the techniques used to value goods and services for which markets may not exist (for example pollution, free access facilities, healthcare)
  • Policy evaluation
