Module aims

  • To provide training to students that will enhance their personal effectiveness, planning and communication & presentation skills, and bioethics, relevant to employability and to their ability to conduct research work.
  • To enhance students' ability to critically evaluate the scientific literature.
  • To introduce students to research project work, through the planning and conducting a team project.

Module learning outcomes

Subject Content:

  • To be able to work in small groups to explore the scientific literature in areas of particular interest to the students, and in topic areas related to their degree programme (e.g. Industrial Biotechnology).

Academic and Graduate Skills:

  • To undertake critical evaluations of current scientific literature relevant to the programme.
  • To synthesise a well-developed and compelling argument from multiple literature sources.
  • To be able to work in a team as well as individually on a variety of tasks around relevant research topics, and professional graduate attributes.
  • To be able to demonstrate effective planning and management of scientific research projects individually or whilst taking on different roles with a team or research group.
  • To communicate scientific findings through a range of media including written reports, and poster & oral presentations.

Module feedback

Formative feedback on tutorial performance provided in person in the final tutorial of the series and in written form academics submit to UG office after the tutorial series ends. Feedback on summative assessment provided within 6 weeks of the assessment.
