What is Meningitis B, and why am I being offered a vaccine?
Meningococcal group B (also known as MenB) is a type of bacteria that can cause serious, life-threatening illnesses such as meningitis and septicaemia. Being around lots of new people in shared living spaces like university halls increases the risk of the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease spreading.
Following recent outbreaks of MenB across the UK, the Department of Health and Social Care is running a time-limited vaccination programme for young people.
Eligible students will need 2 doses of the vaccination for protection, given 4 weeks apart.
What if I’ve already had a Meningitis vaccination?
You may have previously received a vaccine against MenACWY - another strain of bacteria that can cause meningitis. It’s important to note that the MenB vaccine is a different, separate vaccine, and you should arrange to be up to date with both - as well as your vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).
In a close-knit community like a university, we must all be vigilant to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses. Remind yourself of the symptoms of Meningitis to watch out for, and what to do if you are feeling unwell.
Who is eligible for the free vaccine?
Any undergraduate first year students born after 21 July 2001 and who will be attending university for the first time in autumn 2026 are eligible for a free vaccination. This includes international students starting their first undergraduate degree in autumn 2026.
If you are a returning or postgraduate student, you are able to pay to have the vaccination privately.

How can I get a vaccine?
During Welcome Week there will be a drop-in clinic on campus:
- Mon 21 - Fri 25 September: Spring Lane Building (top floor) between 10.30am - 2pm
- Sat 26 September: James College Block Q portacabins near the Welcome Fair between 10am - 2pm
Alternatively, you can find a pharmacy that offers MenB vaccinations for young people.
