IT services over the summer

News | Posted on Tuesday 27 May 2025

We know you’re probably looking forward to a well-deserved break over the summer but there are some important things to keep in mind if you need to use IT services.

Leaving the University?

If you won’t be returning to the University after the summer break please make sure you read through the IT Student leaver guide.

The guide includes information on when you’ll lose access to your University email account, Library e-sources and the VLE as well as instructions on how to transfer any files and data you need from different services before you leave. It’s really important you make the time to transfer these files as you’ll lose access to them once you leave.

Another important thing to do before you leave is move any accounts you’ve set up with your University email address for things like Deliveroo or Uber to a non University address.

Working over summer?

If you’ll be returning to York after the break and are planning on working over summer, you may need to use our virtual private network (VPN). The VPN lets you connect to the University network so you can access restricted services and get access to your filestore.

You can also use the VPN or the virtual desktop service (VDS) to access University services if you’ll be working overseas, the VDS provides you with a secure way to access the applications on your University desktop as well as your filestore.

Getting support with IT

Our IT support drop-in session in the Library will continue to run between 2 and 4pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout summer. You can also read through our how-to-guides and help or complete our contact form for support.
